Dragon Well green tea is regarded as one of China’s top teas, and is often served to visiting head’s of states. Hand-flattened jade-green leaves create a mellow-sweet taste with chestnut overtones. Long ago, in the misty hills near Hangzhou, there was a small village plagued by drought. The rice fields were cracked, the wells ran dry, and the people prayed daily to the heavens for rain.
In this village lived a kind-hearted monk who tended a humble temple by an ancient spring. The villagers called it the Dragon Well, for it was said that a benevolent dragon spirit slept beneath its waters, guarding the land.
One day, as the drought reached its peak, the emperor of China passed through the region. Thirsty and weary, he stopped at the temple. The monk, with no fine offerings, served him a cup of tea brewed from the tender green leaves that grew wild near the spring.
The emperor sipped… and paused. The tea was soft and sweet, with a fragrance like spring rain. He asked its name.
“Just humble leaves,” the monk replied, “nourished by the Dragon Well.”
Moved, the emperor declared the trees near the well imperial tea trees, and the spring sacred. That very night, rain finally fell, drenching the earth and reviving the crops. The villagers rejoiced, giving thanks to the dragon and the magic of the tea.
From then on, Lóngjǐng — Dragon Well Tea — was revered not just as a drink, but as a blessing.
